Selects New Principal
A hiring panel has selected Dr. Bruce Mims as the new principal at Westchester High.
Following an extensive search Mims became the choice and he will begin after processing with the Los Angeles Unified School District is completed.
Mims, who formerly worked at National University, was most recently at Argosy University. His background includes being an assistant principal at high schools in Rialto, Hacienda Heights and Long Beach and teaching in San Diego.
The hiring panel included teachers, parents, students and community members and the process included assistance from the LMU Family of Schools staff and the Los Angeles Unified District's iDesign Schools office.
Baldwin Park Firm Earns Space Education Award
The California Space Authority, the state agency dedicated to promoting California as the preeminent aerospace state, has honored the Baldwin Hills based Traveling Space Museum, Inc. as a winner of their 2008 Buzz Aldrin Space Education and Workforce SpotBeam Award.
CSA grants SpotBeam Awards to space stakeholders who make extraordinary contributions to California's leadership in the United States and international space arenas.
Founded by Ivor Dawson in 1998, TSM has inspired more than 200,000 California students from San Diego to Sacramento by bringing full-scale and interactive exhibits --including a real jet aircraft –to neighborhood schools.
A proposed partnership with LA Councilmen Herb Wesson is aimed at keeping the nationally roaming TSM in Central Los Angeles producing space themed events and after school academies in neighborhood schools. TSM exhibits were recently featured at the “Taste of Soul” and Vineyard Park Street Fairs.
Other 2008 SpotBeam honorees include: Lt. Governor John Garamendi, Rep. Mike Honda and Space X, the private rocket company founded by PayPal billionaire Elon Musk.
The SpotBeam Awards Dinner took place at The Proud Bird Restaurant located near LAX on November 19.
